Mujhse fraandship karoge – A Cinderella story

Bollywood recently saw the release of its own version of a movie that can be grouped under the Cinderella stories. Mujhse fraandship karoge was released under the Yash Chopra banner or to be more precise the value segment low budget banner of Yash Chopra called Y films. Y films is headed by Ashish Patel aimed at promoting fresh talent and basically the budgets of these movies will be as much as the wardrobe expenses of Shah Rukh Khan or Kajol in the actual Yash Chopra films. Nupur Aasthana is no novice to teenage scripts. Do you recollect “Hip hip hurray” from our yesteryears which showed a school that was not the least like your school? Well, she directed that series. All said, it was a nice series and the pseudo American youth culture was beautifully captured in it. She has directed MFK and right from the outset you know that the story is a college romance set in the facebook age.

The movie features only new faces except Mita Vashisht who doesn’t have a significant role. Saqib Saleem plays lead as Vishal. He is a happy-go-lucky soppy-song-lyricist who sees Malvika Kekar (Tara D’Souza who is also seen in Mere Brother ki Dulhan) in one of the gigs where he has written the song for Rahul Sareen (Nishant Dahiya). He falls for her and decides to add her on facebook as Rahul Sareen. Now Malvika is the room mate of Preity Sen (Saba Azad) who is a little bit of an Ice princess. She is attracted to Rahul, the rockstar. She sees the add request and starts chatting with Rahul on facebook as Malvika. So what ensues is a comic display of the intended confusion. Meanwhile Vishal and Preity are set to work on a college project and they can’t stand each other. Malvika and Rahul meet a couple of times because of what their friends have done and seem to be hitting off really well. The story culminates to a suitable, expected and dramatic end just the way we like it.

For me the enjoyable parts of the movie were many. Saqib Saleem is natural and does an excellent job. Saba Azad is pretty decent in her role too. Nishant is wooden and Tara is plastic but thankfully they play supporting roles. The story is cohesive and doesn’t really have many gaping holes. The movie is as short as it could be; so wonderful job on the editing. It moves rapidly without any song sequences in Kashmir or Amsterdam. Budgets might have been a reason for this and it works for this movie. It is a cute love story with the usual off color jokes without really blowing the top. It draws inspiration from A Cinderella story, American pie and the likes without really looking like a major rip off.

Watch it for the freshness. Watch it for nice performances from absolute newcomers which speak volumes about the talent that is available in our country. Nupur Asthana delivers a light romantic comedy that’s both funny and short. The movie won’t stay with you but it was only meant to make you smile. If you’ve not seen it already, you’ve missed something nice!
