When the Titans clashed....

Avtar had set a precedent for 3D movies. You have to give it to James Cameroon for that. Clash of Titans was a much awaited movie more so because it had elements of Avtar in it (Sam Worthington and the movie being 3D). The story is an exotic one set during the Greek Gods’ time with all the makings of an exciting action packed movie.

Some of the reactions of people who saw the movie (www.rottentomatoes.com) were as follows

“A fun piece of disposable nonsense”
“Cheesier than fondue at a Roman Orgy”
“Worthington proves that he was only charismatic in Terminator Salvation because he was standing next to Christian Bale”

There is a reason why I am mentioning these reactions. Cause these are far better than the movie itself. Rupert Ebert, a well known movie critic, has recommended a 2D watch over 3D (amongst other things) simply because your child will benefit if he or she gets the extra money that will go as a part of a 3D ticket. So what caused the destruction? The answer is a combination of many things.
Clash of Titans is set at a time when the Gods were growing in superiority and man could not take Gods’ way of ill treating man. They decide to fight against God which is a super human task. Zeus, the king of Gods, is said to have love for man. He beds Calibos’ wife transforming himself as Calibos and she gives birth to a son. Calibos orders their death but the child survives to be a Demi God, Perseus. Years later people of Argos decide to wage a war against God. Hades, the brother of Zeus and God of hell and dead, rises from the underground to torment man. Perseus decides to fight Gods for killing the parents who had brought him up and refuses to join God’s forces. The journey to slain Kracken, a beast monster, and Hades begins.

The movie is a remake of the yester year classic Clash of Titans (1981).It is meant to be a visual delight but the 3D adaptation fails to capture any thrill. The movie was just not meant to be a 3D one. The movie concentrates heavily on its special effects totally forgetting that acting is also a part of the movie. All actors come across as either insipid or extremely cheesy. Liam Neeson plays Zeus; a great actor is wasted there. All the actors come and go in the movie without actually making an impact. Gemma Arterton looks beautiful in her character Io but fails to inspire.

The onus of the movie lies with Sam Worthington and how the director Louis Letterier would use him. Sam for me is a good actor but is not in the league yet. His dialogues feel like he is mumbling something. The screenplay is just not great and the attempted humor also falls flat. There are some scenes that have used great effects. I especially enjoyed the scene where Perseus and others go to find Gorgon Medusa. It is nicely done. But overall the movie looks like a comic with most characters looking emotionless. The last scene where Princess Andromeda has to be saved finishes without the protagonist putting up a fight and hustles the movie to an end. The movie is not great but the kids will love it for all the monsters and a shiny Neeson. You know if you’d like to watch this or not, right?
