Anta Maaya….

Gautham Menon is one of the epic directors in South India. He has made some particularly impressive movies in Kaaka Kaaka and Vetaiaydu Villayadu in Tamil which were later made by him in Telugu as Gharshana and Raghavan. He is one of the critically acclaimed directors. These were action movies, nevertheless the direction and the acting in these movies deserve a special mention. He is par excellence.

With Ye Maya chesave Gautham has attempted to make a love story. He has chosen new comers in Naga Chaitanya and Samantha as his lead characters. Naga Chaitanya happens to have film legacy thanks to his birth in the Akkineni family. Gautham does have movies like Minnale to his credit which was a Super hit. But Ye Maya chesave, I am afraid falls grossly below expectations.

The movie is a love story and it involves two characters moving in and out of love. The movie attempts to show the ups and downs in a relationship with respect to circumstances and fails miserably in achieving that. For starters I think Gautham has directed this movie because he lost a bet in a bar and hence had to make a movie without a script. There was no story and the entire movie was managed with some shoddy screenplay. The movie’s saving grace is Samantha Ruth Prabhu. She is portrayed in a drop dead gorgeous way and will cross a few hearts with this movie. She has done a decent job in her role but the much needed chemistry between Chaitanya and Samantha was missing. The movie portrays the lead female belonging to a Malayali family. There are many dialogues in Malayalam to provide authenticity.

Movie industry today sees the debut and launch of a lot of kids of actors. Bollywood has seen a few in the recent times. Some of the actors who have made their debut recently have been fantastic. Though it does help them to come with a Kapoor tag or Khanna tag, it is a whole another thing to come and do a professional job in a movie. Ranbir Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar are some names that come immediately to my mind and their acting prowess needs no mention. In this light the second movie of Naga Chaitanya makes him look like a complete buffoon. It isn’t so much the movie’s fault. His acting left much to be desired. He is found completely incapable of emoting and I saw some of the flattest dialogue delivery in a long time. It hurts me particularly because such an unworthy performance was deemed ok by Gautham. I recently watched LSD and Chaitanya can certainly learn a thing or two from any of actors in that movie.

Harris Jairaj has been the music director of choice for Gautham for most of his movies. This time he has chosen A R Rehman. The music is hummable but does not blend with the movie. Even the background score which is usually impressive and innovative in Gautham movies is just atrocious in this movie. Some scenes had a rock guitar playing in the background for no apparent reason. Never knew that a movie could actually put Rehman out of place. The song sequences did have some breathtaking locations and Manoj’s cinematography was good. Kerala and Goa were some locations of choice and were captured beautifully.

The movie has been doing well. Some of the reviews I have read deem it as a refreshing romcom. The movie does have the feel like the movie Anand but doesn’t come any where near. The movie has been doing pretty well on an average. Guess the Telugu audience seems to have accepted this movie which isn’t every surprising. The concept of a good Telugu movie has been reduced to a non-bad movie. Some of the Telugu movies are just over the top. They are loud and brash and movies where the protagonist is a Super Hero and can pretty much do anything. A movie like this one offers a welcome change and even with so many shortcomings it does get accepted as a one time watch. If you compare it with the quality of the movies produced by other industries then they fall considerably short. There is very little innovation or content. The only improvisations happen in how the action scenes are shot or what new locales have been explored. There is a seldom a script like a Karthik calling Karthik or even Ishqiya. I don’t know if it is a question of audience preference. I can’t see them not accepting an intelligent movie and so far we just have been subjected to some formula movies over and over again.

Recommendation to watch – Are you a die hard romantic? Do you sob looking at love stories? This is the movie for you because it is not going to make you cry and will make you adapt better things in life. Anta maaya… (everything is maaya)
