Love Aaj Kal...
Dazed!! This was the feeling, I came out with after I finished watching LAK. It wasn’t Wolverine that I was watching (whose action by the way left me gaping). But still, this movie managed to make me think but in a different way. I was trying to resolve as to what was the message the director had in his mind when he set out to make this movie.
The Jab we met director Imtiaz Ali certainly seems to have one theme. That is unexpressed love. This script has that essence and the need to set it in contemporary times (it might even be a slightly futuristic. God no, not like Love story 2050!!). The movie has its uniqueness. For eg. by the time the credits had fallen the couple had broken up and quite happily so. Each one is off chasing their dreams and is trying to help the other in his/her love life. There is one catch though. Each one is trying to be happy for the other but is not happy for the other and find it immensely difficult to convey it. This is the part that kinda bummed me out. I have known people struggling with feelings. But recognizing that you are struggling with a feeling is not that tough and sometimes you get only to this part as we do not know how to get out of that feeling. We try to shut it out or distract ourselves but it keeps coming up. This is the part of the story that got dragged a little. There was enough logic to support this though. Saif points out that Deepika has known him more than he knows himself and she is the first to realize how they feel about each other but waits for him to find out for himself. But still….
The movie has its moments and the contrast between the yester year’s love story and the contemporary times is nicely captured. Time has changed you’d see and he concludes saying that the essence of Love isn’t lost and concepts such as soulmates are true. He did manage all this with the contemporary couple never using the word love, which is hard to digest. I cant imagine such a self sufficient couple who don’t discuss if the other one loves him/her or not. A platonic relationship was portrayed which is seen in many Hollywood movies and this movie has a definite western flavor. How much the Indian audience going to accept it is for us to wait and see?
Recommendation – must watch!! If relationships can be like this, it is fantastic!! :)
