8*10 Tasveer

After a long time comes a Nagesh Kukunoor movie. We all know one thing for sure it isn’t mainstream. He is known for his experimentation with cinema and has a style of his own. 8*10 Tasveer must clearly feature as his Magnum Opus. The movie is got style, substance and some nice performances although it lacks pace.

The movie is about Ajay (Akshay Kumar) having a unique quality of going into a picture and discovering all that happens one minute before the picture is clicked. The movie begins with Akshay Kumar’s dad dying and though people discount it to be an accident Happi (Javed Jaffery), the detective, convinces Ajay that it is a murder. The story unfolds from there on with a lot of twists and turns and we have a suspense thriller on our hands.

In one interview of Nagesh Kukunoor I heard him say that he knows that Akshay is probably bigger than the movie but he has still made the movie the way he wants. The story is set in Canada and the locales, the backgrounds are breathtaking. The cast including Sharmila Tagore, Ayesh Takia and others has delivered expectantly. I was surprised to see Girish Karnad play a role that could have been played by anybody who has probably done two ad films. I think he was helping out an old friend there.

The movie is a big step for Nagesh as he attempts his first thriller. Its an out and out Akshay Kumar show and he delivers with finesse. Nothing macho, no fancy dance steps, no great stunts, no colorful clothing and yet Akshay carries the movie beautifully. There is still a but. The movie’s background score could have been better. It felt like soap after a while, of course without the dramatic background music. The movie drags along where audiences can lose interest here and there. The attempt at comedy with Javed Jaffery works in certain areas and doesn’t in some places. This adds to woes of the movie. The worst part of the movie is the end where the story turns on its top. The movie reminds you of a Hollywood thriller with a very Bollywood ending. The drama at the end leaves a bad taste and is a little outrageous. The key to a suspense thriller is to surprise the audience in the end. In that attempt Nagesh has brought such wildness to the movie that the audience loses faith in the story.

Recommendation to watch – well, I would still say a definite one time watch. The feeling of a Bollywood masala movie is not there in this movie and hence deserves its credit. Go with the kind of friends who like to get engrossed in a movie and not much of a chatty type. Because the latter will lose interest easily and so will u. 3 out of 5 for me but definitely a feather in Bollywood’s cap.
