Delhi – 6

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi-6 was this week’s big release. The movie came out with a lot of fans of Abhishek looking forward to it, the curiosity the teasers created and of course the new look of Sonam Kapoor who looks refreshingly beautiful in Delhi – 6. So amongst the excitement opened the follow up to Rang De Basanti for the director.

The movie is a mixture of a lot of things. It had a love story parallel to a famous news gig: the monkey man and parallely ran a communal riot story. The first half left the audience stunned. They came out to buy more popcorn and soda. There were 2 distinct reactions. One, a feeling of being completely lost and the second, the one of hope where you say ‘yaar, picture toh abhi shuru hogi!!’ . Whichever feeling you have the second half eventually manages to disappoint you. The movie is a collection of events some connected and some subtly connected which common people like me failed to see the need or connection. Actors in their individual roles did an excellent job. That is the most heartening part of the movie. Waheeda Rahman,Om Puri,Pavan Malhotra, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz have all done a wonderful job. Abhishek Bacchan has evolved as an actor and his performance can be compared to movies like Sarkar and Sarkar Raj. He is the soul of the movie and has done a great job. Sonam Kapoor is going to be the next poster girl and she will touch more hearts because she looks exquisite in the Punjabi suits and pulls of a great Delhi gal next door. If you separate the actors from the movie two things evidently come out, the sublime performances and the amazing direction and screenplay.

ROM’s movies have always been thematic. RDB was about awakening and assuming responsibility, Aks had a theme of good and bad are two sides of a coin and Delhi 6 has a culmination of both. It shows the affected man helpless and also how evil is something that exists as a part of us. But the movie lacks flair. The editing is poor and the movie drags along. The finale where Abhishek almost dies goes back to our age old hindi movie climaxes and it lacks variety and the punch. The message conveyed by ROM is confusing and the need to entertain the audience is lost in an attempt to convey the message. The stage show of Ramayan that runs in the background is unnecessary and the movie actually feels like a 3 hour news program on India TV.

Recommendation to watch – I would say go watch it once but don’t invite any friends and definitely do not include your date. Watch the movie to fall in love with Sonam and Abhishek and watch it to encourage Indian cinema to make such bold movies. But if you are a selective movie goer and hate bad movies please do not try this one, because this is bad selection.
